The Best Rooftops To Eat & Drink In NYC This Summer

After a heavy hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, the place that many once called the greatest city on earth is finally restoring itself back to being the emblem city of the USA, and the thriving lifestyle it represents. Welcome back New York, you have been missed.

As a new resident of the 212, I couldn’t wait to explore what is perhaps the most appealing aspect of the city for visitors who grew up on small islands like myself; their abundance of gorgeous rooftop venues. There’s no feeling quite like being able to gaze out at the NYC skyline that fueled the very manifestation of our world’s biggest dreamers, whilst sipping on a fancy (probably overpriced, but worth it) cocktail of your choosing. With careful research and some very enjoyable exploration, I’ve listed out the most satisfying rooftop experiences that are currently open to the public for you all to enjoy during your visit to New York City this Summer.

Before listing off these gems, I find it of pivotal importance to let you all know two VERY important factors about the “rooftop” venues of New York, I learned these the hard way, so you wouldn’t have to!

  1. Not every place that’s categorized as a “rooftop” is actually located on a rooftop. Without the right amount of research, one may often find themselves entering a venue that yes- required stairs or an elevator to get to, and yes- technically stands on the roof of a two story building, but only has one dining area big enough for only one party to enjoy actual rooftop views. While I was still very pleased with a majority of venues, I know that many of you that aren’t accustomed to the North East may take this word at face value and end up being disappointed. Do your research, and be weary of misleading mystification in advertisements!
  2. Book your reservation for EVERY venue listed below AT LEAST one week in advance. I would go as far as to say you should be booking your reservations as early as your plane tickets if you truly want to enjoy an NYC rooftop without trouble. The demand is higher than you could imagine right now, and bribing the bouncers & hostesses won’t be a viable option.
If and when you’ve taken these pointers into account, now comes the fun part- choosing!

Elsie Rooftop, Midtown

Elsie boasts all the elegance and glamour one could dream of during their visit to New York. The venue is beautifully decorated for the perfect photo opp- and theres no shortage of views to choose from to make sure yours is one that stands out from the basics. The lively atmosphere in Elsie also makes it the perfect pregame spot to head to before a night out in Manhattan, evoking the perfect gatsby-esque mood for you and your squad. Did I mention they whip up a mean dirty martini?!

SERRA by Birreria, Flatiron

This newly ravamped venue can be found right on top of the well renowned Italian Market, Eataly in the Flatiron district. Serra is an ever-evolving venue; quite literally, it changes with the seasons! With that being said, it can only be fair to visit during every change to enjoy their delicious homemade pasta in every form possible. Italian food enthusiasts can call SERRA their new Haven, and if you don’t do it for the food, do it for the photo-opp!

If you’re looking to catch the artistic edge of New York to literally and figuratively “elevate” your experience, look no further than Mr. Purple on the 15th floor of Hotel Indigo. The backdrop of this extravagant rooftop venue features picturesque views of downtown NYC, while its menu is loaded with every cocktail imaginable from cucumber margaritas to fresh pressed virgin juices. TacoVision, Flatiron

While TacoVision isn’t necessarily located on a rooftop (as some sources may suggest) I found it more than worthy to be added to this list as a recommendation. With it’s newly revamped and stylish social distancing tables, TacoVision’s outdoor venue is perfect for those still feeling weary about dining out. It’s double tasty margaritas can be taken in to-go pitchers, making it a prime pregame spot before a night on the town. TacoVision is also mint for those of you who consider themselves to be bargain eaters, without hesitation I can say it was easily one of the most affordable QUALITY dinners I’ve experienced in the 212 thus far. You may also be pleasantly surprised by their superb taste in music (think 1990s-early 2000s hip hop bangers!)

The interior of Make Believe will have you feeling like you’re somewhere in between a fairytale and a tropical illusion- in the middle of the greatest city in the world! Top of the Box, Brooklyn

Located above the Box House Hotel in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, many would say that Top of the Box is aesthetically pleasing enough to be a wedding venue- because it actually is! Top of the Box’ (slightly newer) cocktail bar is now welcoming the public with open arms and gorgeous panoramic views to enjoy their signature cocktails. You don’t have to tie the knot to bask in all the beauty this venue has to offer anymore.

JIMMY, SoHO

Located just above the Modernhaus SoHo Hotel, it’s not hard to see why Jimmy has become an iconic meeting point for the people of New York, locals and visitors alike.
